I Can No Longer Activate My Old iPhone

Awesome. Went to activate an old iPhone 5 to be used as an “iPod”. Performed the Erase all Content and Settings action and swiped to set up my “new” phone. Imagine my surprise when this message appeared on my screen:

A bit of research indicates that it is no longer possible to activate an iPhone without a SIM card installed if it’s locked to a carrier without jailbreaking or borrowing a SIM from a friend.

Way to go, Apple. This is why I switched to Android. Freedom to use my own phone – that I purchased for hundreds of dollars – in the way I want to!
